Drama „Nezavisnost” (Independence) napisana je 1984. godine i jedno je od ranijih, ali značajnih djela američkog dramatičara Lee Blessinga. Radnja se odvija u malom gradu Independence, u saveznoj državi Iowa, i prati život majke Evelyn Briggs i njene tri kćerke – Kess, Sherry i Jo. Kroz njihove složene i napete odnose, Blessing istražuje teme obiteljskih sukoba, generacijskih razlika, osobne slobode i cijene nezavisnosti. Svaka kći na svoj način pokušava pronaći put ka vlastitoj samostalnosti, dok ih majčina dominacija i emocionalna manipulacija sputava. Iako je riječ o intimnoj drami s malim brojem likova i jednostavnom scenom, djelo nosi snažan emotivni naboj. Autor pokazuje kako borba za nezavisnost – bilo obiteljsku, osobnu ili društvenu – uvijek dolazi uz određene žrtve i konflikte.
The play Independence was written in 1984 and is one of the earlier yet significant works by the American playwright Lee Blessing. The story takes place in the small town of Independence in the state of Iowa and follows the life of the mother Evelyn Briggs and her three daughters – Kess, Sherry and Jo. Through their complex and tense relationships, Blessing explores themes of family conflict, generational differences, personal freedom and the price of independence. Each daughter attempts in her own way to find a path towards her own autonomy, while their mother’s dominance and emotional manipulation hold them back. Although it is an intimate drama with a small number of characters and a simple stage setting, the play carries a strong emotional charge. The author demonstrates how the struggle for independence – whether familial, personal or social – always comes with certain sacrifices and conflicts.
